FRANCES S. WATERS, LMSW, DCSW, LMFT, PLC
Frances S. Waters, DCSW, LMSW, LMFT, is an internationally recognized trainer, consultant, and clinician in childhood trauma, abuse, and dissociation, and has presented on 5 continents. She has specialized in the field of childhood trauma and abuse for over 45 years.
Ms. Waters is the past President of The International Society for the Study of Trauma & Dissociation (ISSTD) and has served on many committees with ISSD, including co-chair of ISSTD’s Child & Adolescent Committee, ISSTD’s Child Treatment Guidelines Task Force, and ISSTD’s Faculty Director of the Child Adolescent Psychotherapy Training Programs.
Ms. Waters is the author of Healing the Fracture Child: Diagnosing and Treating Dissociative Youth (2016) and a comprehensive checklist of indicators of trauma and dissociation, CIT-DY (2020) (Parent & Youth Versions), a developmentally sensitive rating system for preschoolers through adolescents. She is currently conducting research on these checklists. She has written numerous chapters on childhood dissociation.
Ms. Waters is a contributing editor for the Journal of Child & Adolescent Trauma and on the editorial board of the Journal of Child Sexual Abuse. She is a member of the National Advisory Board of the Leadership Council on Child Abuse and Interpersonal Violence.
Ms. Waters is the executive producer and participant of two training videos- The Traumatized Child: Understanding and Parenting the Traumatized Child & Teaching the Traumatize Child for parents and teachers, and Trauma & Dissociation in Children specifically geared toward child forensic evaluators and prosecutors.
Ms. Waters received the 2008 Media Award from the American Professional Society on Abuse of Children for her production of Trauma and Dissociation in Children, the 2012 ISSTD’s Presidential Award for her faculty directorship of ISSTD’s Psychotherapy Training Course on Child & Adolescent Trauma and Dissociation, the ISSTD’s 2019 Cornelia B. Wilbur Award for her research, training and clinical work in the field of trauma and dissociation, the 2019 William Friedrich Memorial Child Sexual Abuse Research, Assessment and/or Treatment Award from Institute on Violence, Abuse and Trauma, and the ISSTD’s 2022 Lifetime Distinguished Achievement Award.
Ms. Waters has advanced certification in trauma and dissociation, certified in Levels 1 & 2 of EMDR, and certified in Havening.
During Ms. Waters's partial retirement, she continues to train, write, and consult, and maintains a small private practice in Marquette, MI.
